Trash or Treasure!

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure

This is Lynx. she is a registered quarter horse. She is 23 years old.

We were contacted by someone in January of 2024. Her owner was moving and couldn’t take her with him. She had had several babies and was not too old to carry anymore foals.

We asked if she could ride, we were told that they didn’t know. They had owned her for many years but had only used her as a broodmare.

We drove to see her. She was fuzzy and fat. Her mane was long and tangled. We agreed to take her. We loaded her up and brought her over the mountain.

We took a chance.. And what a wonderful gift she has been!

Lynx has become one of the favorite horses in the barn. She lets some of the smallest kids ride her. She has enough spunk for teenagers. She is a wonderful teacher.

She has sparked several conversations during therapy. One thought is that you should not count horses or people out. Many of the kids I work with have often been judged by others. If we had judged Links by her age or her looks, we might have passed her over. Just because we have had imperfect pasts, it doesn’t define what our future will be.

Another conversation that comes up is wondering how someone could give her away. It brings up hurt for people who were adopted. It leads to a discussion about how she was given to us. She could have been sold to someone they didn’t know. She was given and entrusted with us to give her the best life possible. She is living a better life with us than where she was at. She gets cookies, hugs, love and all the attention she hadn’t had the past 10 years.

Someone might think she was trash– worth nothing– but to us – she is a treasure! More valuable than gold.
